Electricity π‘ Flashcards
Static electricity
A build up of electric charge that can occur on good insulators e.g. polythene and Perspex rods
Polythene rod
Gains electrons if a woollen cloth is rubbed on it (becomes negatively charged).
Perspex rod
Loses electrons if it is rubbed by a woollen cloth (becomes positively charged)
Electric current
Is a flow of electric charge
Conductors
Are substances which allow electric current to flow through them freely
Insulators
Are substances which do not allow electric current to flow through them
What is an electric current caused by
A flow of electrons through a good conductor such as a metal
The negative end of the battery is an area of what
Of high electric pressure
The positive end of the battery is an area of what
Of low electric pressure
Which electric pressure will electrons move from
From areas of high electric pressures to areas of low electric pressure
Potential difference
The difference in electric pressure between the positive and negative ends
Voltage
What the potential difference is known as. Itβs measured in volts
Resistance
the opposition to the flow of electrons. The unit is the Ohm and it is measured using an Ohmmeter.
Resistor
If places in an electric circuit, it will slow down the flow of electrons.
