The digestive process and Asexual Reproduction and mitosis Flashcards
What is digestion
Digestion is the break down of large insoluble food molecules to small soluble food molecules.w
What are the two ways food is digested?
Mechanically - using teeth and stomach muscles
Chemically - using digestive enzymes
What is absorption ?
The process of moving molecules through the walls of the intestines into the blood
(Digested food molecules absorbed in small intestine , water absorbed mainly in the large intestine)
What is the process of putting food into your mouth called ?
Ingestion
What is digestion ?
The break down of large insoluble food molecules to small soluble food molecules
In which two ways is food digested ?
Mechanically - teeth and stomach muscles
Chemically - digestive enzymes
What is absorption?
The movement of molecules through the intestinal walls to the blood
What is the process of digested molecules becoming part of a cell called ?
Assimilation
E.g when amino acids are assimilated they’re used to make cellular proteins
What is the process of the removal of undigested food (faeces) through the anus called?
Egestion?
What in the small intestine , is used in absorption
The villi
The millions and millions of villi on the walls of the small intestine cause ?
A large surface area for absorption
How thick are the villi ? And what do they have that assists quick absorption?
A single permeable layer
A very good blood supply
Which cell division does Asexual reproduction involve?
Mitosis
What is mitosis ?
Mitosis is when a cell reproduces itself by splitting to form two cells with identical sets of chromosomes
Give two examples of organisms that produce asexually
Bacteria and some plants
What is Asexual reproduction ?
Reproduction that only involves one parent , that produces an offspring that is genetically identical to the parent
In a cell that is not dividing how is the DNA spread out?
It is spread out in long strings
Before the cell divides it must _____________ ?
Duplicate itself
Causing the DNA to have X shaped chromosomes
The arms are identical ,right arm = left arm
What pulls the chromosomes that a are lined up at the centre of the cell apart ?
What does this cause ?
Cell fibres
The two arms of each chromosomes to go to opposite ends of the cell
After the two arms of the chromosomes are at opposite ends , what happens?
A membrane forms around each set of chromosomes.
These become the nuclei of the two cells
What is the last step in mitosis
The cytoplasm splits!
Aside from asexual reproduction , what is mitosis used in?
Growth and repair of damaged tissue
