The Alimentary Canal Flashcards
What are the nine main parts of the alimentary canal ?
1) The mouth
2) The oesophagus
3) The liver
4) The stomach
5) The gall bladder
6) The pancreas
7) The small intestine
8) The large intestine
9) The Anus
Which glands are present in the mouth and what enzyme do they produce?
Glands - Salivary glands
Enzyme - Amylase
What is the oesophagus?
The muscular tube that connects the mouth and the stomach
What is produced in the liver ?
Bile
Where is bile stored ?
The gall bladder
What does the stomach do ?
It pummels the food with its muscular walls
The protease enzyme - PEPSIN,is produced
It produces Hydrochloric acid
Why is HCL produced in the stomach?
To kill bacteria
And
To make the stomach the correct ph for the protease enzyme pepsin to work (pH2- acidic)
What does the pancreas do?
It produces protease , amylase and lipase enzymes. It releases these into the small intestine
Where are protease , amylase and lipase enzymes produced to complete digestion?
The small intestine
What happens in the small intestine ?
Nutrients are absorbed out of the Alimentary canal
And
Amylase , protease and lipase enzymes are produced to complete digestion
In the large intestine , excess _____________ is absorbed from _____________ .
Water
Food
What does the anus do?
Where faeces is removed from
What is the job of the muscular tissue in the alimentary canal ?
To squeeze boluses through the gut so it does not get clogged up.
What is peristalsis
The waves of circular muscle contractions
The alimentary canal is also called the _________ ?
Gut
