Sexual Reproduction And Meiosis Flashcards
What are the two gametes ?
Sperm cells - male
Egg cells - female
How many chromosomes does a gamete have ? Is it haploid or diploid ?
23 chromosomes
Haploid
What is a name for a fertilised egg?
A zygote
What type of cell division does the zygote go through ?
Mitosis
Then develops into an embryo
Which cell division process are gametes produced by ?
Meiosis
What is meiosis ?
The process of producing 4 haploid cells whose chromosomes are not identical
Where does meiosis happen?
Only in the reproductive organs -
The ovaries
And the testes
In meiosis before the cell starts to divide what happens ?
The DNA is duplicated
The two arms are the exact copy of one another
Then the chromosomes line up
Why are the pairs pulled apart after being lined up of the centre of the cell ?
So each cell has one copy of each chromosome
(Some will have father , mother ,mother and some would have mother , father , mother. The mixing up of the genes creates variation)
What happens in division 1 and happened in division 2 again?
The chromosomes are lined up at the centre of the cell.
Then the arms are pulled apart.
What is sexual reproduction ?
The fusion of the male and female gametes to produce an offspring with a mixture of their parents genes
(Involves male sperm cells and a female egg cell)
What is the result of meiosis ?
4 haploid gametes - with single sets of chromosomes each , all genetically different
