THE CONCEPT AND NATURE OF GOD Flashcards
what does God being eternal mean
God is eternal and outside of time
P1 Everything in time changes
P2 but God is immutable and does not change
P3 therefore god cannot be in time
P3 therefore he exists eternally
what is one objection to the concept of eternity
the idea of being an eternal being is incoherent.
events in the past were simultaneous with eternity, and events in the present are also simultaneous with eternity. therefore the past and present are simultaneous.
God being within time / everlasting
god is temporal
God is without begging and without end
god interacts with and has a personal relationship with the world
the world is temperal
any being that interacts with the world is temporal
therefore god is everlasting
explain the euthyphro dilemma
attacks the traditional theistic conception that morality originates from the will of God, either god has created morality, meaning that morality is merely arbitrary to gods whims. for example, god would make torture a moral act.
another way is that morality is independent of gods will, thus god is limited by morality and is not all powerful.
what is a critique of the euthyphro dilemma
dichotomy, the argument only presents two options, whereas there are more, such as the morality is based off gods divine nature, instead of his will. therefore it is not arbitrary to his will. morality is innate and unchanging to gods character (omnibenevolence)
the compatibility of god and free humans Ps Cs
P1 humans have free will
P2 god is omniscient and knows everything
P3 this means od knows everything we will do before you do it
P4 if god knows what we will do before we do it then we are not free
c1. therefore p1 and p2 are logically inconsistent
god judging us on predetermined actions
god did not create humans as robots or perts
humans are not responsible for their actions
god will one day jude humans for their actions.
if our actions our not free, and are instead predetermined, then on what basis should god judge our actions. how is one to be praised or punished for actuons which are inevitable
the compatibility of god and free humans Ps Cs
CRITIC
Stump argues that God can see every temporal event simultaneously. this does not imply that god can see before hand, and because there is a no beforehand.
P1. Humans have free will and we haven’t yet chosen what we will do in the future
p2. God knows and sees everything simultaneously from outside time
C1. therefore God can see our past present and futures actions all at once, from a position of e-simultaneously.
p3. although god can see all our future present and past actions, we can still freely choose our actions
C2. therefore human free will (p1) and Gods omniscience p2 are compatibl890,
