COSMOLOGICAL Flashcards
what is the KALAM argument
-whatever begins to exist has a cause
-the universe began to exist
-therefore the universe has a cause
what is a cosmological argument
starts from the observation that everything depends on something else to exist
what are Aquainas’s five ways
arguments from causation
arguments from motion
contingency argument
what is aquinas’ argument from motion
-things in the world are in motion
-whatever is in motion must have been put in motion by something else
-if something in motion must have been put in motion by something else in motion.
-if this chain goes on infinitely then there is no first mover
- if there is no first mover then nothing would be in motion
-so there must be a first mover
- the first mover is god
What does the argument from contingency rely on
-relies on distinction between necessary and contingent
-things the exist contingently might not have existed
-tree in the field wouldn’t exist if nobody had planted the seed
explain the contingency argument
-everything that exists contingently did not exist at some point
-if everything exists contingently then at one point nothing existed
-if nothing existed then nothing could begin to exist
-but since things do exist, there was never nothing in existence
-therefore something exists necessarily
-this necessary being is god
Descartes cosmological argument
expansion of Kalam
-cant be the cause of my existence, or i would be perfect
-i depend on something else to exist
-i can conceive of god
-what caused me to exist, must also conceive of god
-what caused me to exist but be the cause of its own existence, or
