substance dualism Flashcards
define substance dualism
two types of substances, neither relies on others to exist
although substantially distinct, the mind and body are in intimate union with each other.
Argument for substance dualism
-indivisibility argument
bodies are spatially extended and are therefore in principle, divisible. the physical is divisible.
is in line with leibniz law, if two things are different but have the exact same properties, they are identical
however Descartes claims that it is impossible to divide the mind. evidence for the claim comes from introspection.
P1 The body is divisible
p2 the mind is indivisible
c therefore the mind isn’t the body
Descartes conceivability argument
P1 i can clearly and distinctly conceive of my mind as a thinking thing which is not extended in space.
P2 i can clearly and distinctly conceive of my mind as a non thinking which is extended in space.
p3 anything i can conceive, God can create
c god created my mind as a non physical thinking thing, and my body as a physical non thinking thing.
