- looking directly at someone with a pleasant expression shows your interest in communicating
- a dull board expression tells others you are not interested
- eye contact is an important part of your facial expression it helps convey a message that you care and are interested in what a person has to say

- can be viewed as positive by some people and does negative by others
- a warm hug can mean “I love you”, crossing arms and turning away can mean you’re angry or mad

- some people hug is a greeting, some people shake hands or give high-fives

- in speaking to an elder you use respectful language. when speaking to your friends you speak more casually and may have created your own language or slang
- the way you speak can change the meaning of what you say. the tone of voice can affect the meaning of the words
- by developing your skills and expressing yourself, you will send clearer messages

- attack the person, not the problem
- they send messages that judge, command, or blame the other person
- some people use them to vent to personal feelings to give solutions
- attack the receiver’s self-esteem. as a result, to receive a response in a defensive manner, making the receiver feel his or her thoughts, opinions, plans are unimportant
