- children imitate and pretend to be like their parents
- this provides parents the opportunity to help children develop relationships, make decisions, and control their emotions
- parents should model desired behaviour

A
- limits should be well defined and clearly explained
- it helps children know what’s exactly expected of them

be consistent (3)
A
- parents need to be consistent in their expectations
- if a behaviour is allowed one time and another, child becomes confused
- with consistency, a child will else the family’s rules and will most likely respect them

use positive reinforcement (3)
A
- encourages desired behaviour, praise them, give them a high five
- it lets them know that their behaviour pleases the parent
- don’t reinforce negative behaviour -> giving in when a child begs, or whines, or throws a temper tantrum

- helps children know what to expect and helps parents show parental control
- helps children develop self discipline, and knows acceptable behavioural limits
- once children know what is expected of them, they can learn to control their behaviour

training by redirecting
A
-guiding a child from one activity to a more acceptable one, changing their focus on something else

A
- a parent can guide a child’s actions by expressing personal desire to give the child a chance to please the parent
- avoid using negative commands or YOU-statements, it will give the child negative feelings of worth

training by punishment (2)
A
- the purpose of punishment is to give the child a reason to regret the behaviour, preventing the child from repeating poor behaviour
- do not take something away as punishment it may push the child to keep rebelling until they have nothing left
