What caused the second Berlin Crisis

A
  • Federal Republic of Germany (west) received Marshall Aid making them strong and rich
  • German democratic republic (East) was poorer as the USSR gave less econ help
  • Many GDR citizens were unhappy (low QOL) w the lack of freedom
  • so the migration crisis happened as 3million ppl from GDR fled to East Berlin which was part of (FRoG) for a better life

  • Khrushchev decided W.Berlin would have to become part of the German Democratic Republic so that citizens of E.berlin couldnt just go to W.berlin
  • So Khrushchev offered the West, The Berlin Ultimatum

  • USSR had prior to the meeting shot down American U-2 spy plane
  • Eisenhower claimed the plane was for weather
  • but film showed it was a spy plane
  • Eisenhower refused to apologise for spying as they were inevitable
  • This made Khrushchev storm out of the meeting
