The cognitive approach Flashcards
What do mental processes refer to that occur during thinking .With examples.
That they are private and internal.
Examples: Memory ,perception,
reasoning ,attention ect.
What are schemas?
A schema is the framework of beliefs and expectations that influence cognitive processing. They’re cognitive shortcuts. That are developed from experience.
Why are schemas helpful?
Schemas help us predict what will happen in our world based on our experiences.
Schemas prevent us from becoming overwhelmed by environmental stimuli.
Schemas enable us to process vast amounts of information’s rapidly .
Why are some schemas not helpful?
Schemas can distort our interpretation of sensory
information.
Schemas lead to perceptual errors or inaccurate eye witnesses testimonies.
Schemas can cause biased recall by seeing what we expect.
Negative schemas may have a negative impact on mental health.
What is a theoretical model ?
Theoretical means ‘theory’
-typically diagrams or flow carts that show how information is passed between the different systems that manipulate it.
(Sensory memory - short term memory-long term memory)
What is cognitive neuroscience?
-This refers to the study of how brain structures and biology affect mental processes .The development of brain scanning techniques has allowed us to associate specific brain areas with particular actions ,moods and emotions.
Summarise the biological processes that have been linked with mental processes due to cognitive neuroscience?
Broca’s area - speech production
Pre-frontal cortex - Episodic and semantic memory
Pre frontal cortex -Central execute
Para hippocampal gyrus - OCD
What is cognitive behavioural therapy?
-According to the cognitive approach , depression is caused by negative or irrational mental processes.
-It has be developed to treat depression.
How can you improve eyewitness testimony’s ?
-Research into memory has found how factors such as leading questioning ,post event
discussion and anxiety can lead to inaccurate recall of events. This led to major reforms in police procedure, like the use of the cognitive interview This works by preventing individuals recalling their expectations( schema) by using techniques such as reversing the order and reinstating the context.
What does CBT benefit?
Patient -improves their quality of life as it reduces there depressive symptoms .This benefit the economy because the patient can return to work.
How does the research into eye witness testimony benefit the economy?
-Society is safer , benefit’s the economy as the criminal justice system is made efficient gathering evidence ,less money on retrial’s .
