The Circulatory System Flashcards

Q
How does blood flow to and from the heart?
A
- ) deoxygenated blood enters the heart via the vena cava.
- ) it then enters the right atrium
- ) then the right ventricle
- ) then it goes out of the heart via the pulmonary Artery (Away from the heart)
- ) it is pumped to the lungs where gaseous exchange takes place and it is pumped back to the heart.
- ) the now oxygenated blood enters the pulmonary veIN (INto the heart)
- ) enters the left atrium
- ) enters the left ventricle
- ) and leaves the heart via the Aorta to be pumped around the body to the muscles.
10.) the cycle then repeats when the now deoxygenated blood enters the vena cava.
1
Q
What are the functions of the circulatory system?
A
- transport: carries blood, water, nutrients, oxygen and co2 and the body.
- protection: White blood cells/ antibodies that fight infection are carried in the blood. And platelets are also carried which enables blood to clot to seal wounds.
- temperature: it is regulated by the blood absorbing heat and carrying it to the skin and lungs where it is released
2
Q
What are the three blood vessels?
A
Arteries, veins and capillaries
3
Q
Describe arteries
A
- thick walls
- carries oxygenated blood away from the heart through the aorta
- high pressure
- no valves
- quite elastic walls
- pulse can be located here
4
Q
Describe veins
A
- carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart
- thin walls
- less elastic walls
- they have valves that stop the blood flowing backwards
5
Q
Describe capillaries
A
- microscopic
- link arteries to the veins
- very thin walls to allow diffusion of gas
6
Q
What is your heart rate?
A
The number of times your heart beats in one minute
7
Q
What is your pulse?
A
A recording of the rate per minute at which the heart beats
