Anaerobic Respiration Flashcards
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose –> energy –> lactic acid
What is anaerobic respiration?
Respiration that occurs in the absence of oxygen
When is anaerobic respiration used?
When there isn’t enough oxygen being supplied e.g sprinting (high intensity)
- it can only be used in short bursts roughly 60s long
What is lactic acid?
A mild poison and waste product of anaerobic respiration
What is oxygen debt?
Because we don’t use oxygen in anaerobic respiration, we use glycogen stores instead. In this time we are ‘borrowing’ oxygen which is then ‘owed’ to the body. We pay it back afterwards by panting.
How do you break down lactic acid in your recover period?
- expiration on breath: removes co2 and other waste products from our lungs
- perspiration: a form of temperature control and gets rid of excess water.
- excretion: removes waste products through urine and faeces.
