How do you recognise head injuries?
Loss of consciousness, relaxed limbs, irregular pulse, shallow breathing, dilated pupils, bleeding from the ears.
What are some common injuries?
- Head injuries: make sure they can breathe, put them in recovery position. Concussion can occur.
- fractures: broken bones that occur on the upper and lower limbs.
- hypothermia: the rapid cooling of the body when the temperature drops.
- joint and muscle injuries: these include sprains, strains, pulled muscles, cramp and dislocations.
How do you recognise fractures?
A snapping noise, pain in the area, shape of the limb is abnormal, swelling, bone sticking out
How do you deal with hypothermia?
If the person is wearing wet clothes remove it, cover them with blankets, make them drink a hot drink.
What are sprains?
The over stretching or tearing of a ligament at a joint
What is a strain?
The over stretching of a muscle rather than a joint.
How do you treat joint and muscle injuries?
R- REST: stop and rest injury
I- ICE: apply ice to reduce swelling and pain.
C- COMPRESSION: put a bandage or give support to the injured area.
E- ELEVATION: raise the injured area to decrease circulation and rain other fluids.
