The Cell Cycle Flashcards
Interphase
- Cell spends 90% of it life here
- Gap 1
- Synthesis
- Gap 2
Gap 1 (Interphase)
- 1st stage
- cell carries out normal functions
- Cells increase in size and organelles increase in number
- requires checkpoint
Synthesis (Interphase)
- 2nd stage
- DNA replication inside nucleus
- at end, cell has 2 identical sets of DNA
Gap 2 (Interphase)
- 3rd stage
- Normal functions and additional growth
- Requires critical checkpoint
Mitosis
-4th stage
-Division of Nucleus
-Prophase
-Metaphase
-Anaphase
-Telophase
Prophase (mitosis)
-chromosomes condense, and spindle fibers form
-Nuclear membrane begins to dissolve
-Spindle fibers form
Metaphase (mitosis)
-spindle fibers attach to centromere
-chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
-Metaphase plate
Anaphase (mitosis)
-sister chromatids, separate to opposite sides of the cell (toward the centrioles)
-Spindle fibers shorten
Telophase (mitosis)
-The nuclear membrane reforms
-chromosomes begins to uncoil
-spindle fibers dissolve
Cytokinesis
-process that divided cell’s cytoplasm in half
-animal cells pinch ~> cleavage furrow
-plant cells ~> cell plate
-end result is 2 identical daughter cells
