Mitosis & meiosis Flashcards
What cells do mitosis and meiosis create?
Mitosis - somatic cells (body cells)
Meiosis - gametes (sex cells, egg and sperm)
Similarities between mitosis and meiosis?
Both…
-involved in making new cells
-have starting cells that are diploid
-Go through P.M.A.T
-line up in the middle during metaphase
-go through cytokinesis
Differences between meiosis and mitosis
MEIOSIS
-makes gametes
Goes through PMAT twice
-during prophase Homologous chromosomes pair together
MITOSIS
-makes somatic cells
-prophase- chromosomes condense
-metaphase- chromosomes line up in single file
line
-anaphase - sister chromatids are pulled to opposite sides of the cell
-result is 2 identical diploid cells
Differences between meiosis 1 and 2
MEIOSIS 1
-prophase- crossing over takes place & homologous chromosomes pair together
-metaphase- chromosomes line up in pairs
-anaphase- chromosomes are pulled to opposite ends of the cell
-ends with 2 daughter cells that are diploid
MEIOSIS 2
-prophase- chromosomes condense in both cells
-metaphase- 2 chromosomes line up in a single file line
-anaphase- chromatids are pulled to opposite sides of the cell
-ends with 4 non identical gamete cells that are haploid (n=23)
Similarities between meiosis 1 and 2
Both….
-go through cytokinesis
-go through P.M.A.T
-metaphase, line up in the middle of cell
-involved in the making of gamete (sperm and egg cells)
