The Cardiovascular System Flashcards
Describe the epicardium
The outer layer of the cardiac wall, reduces friction
Describe the myocardium
Middle layer of the cardiac wall, mostly cardiac muscle
Describe the endocardium
Thin inner lining of the cardiac wall, within chamber of heart
What is the role of the SA node?
Sends electrical impulses to the atria
What is the role of the AV node?
To carry electrical impulses to the ventricles
What is systolic blood pressure?
The maximum pressure achieved during ventricular contraction
What is diastolic blood pressure?
The lowest pressure that remains in the arteries during ventricular diastole?
What does an artery do?
Carries oxygen rich blood away from the heart.
What does a vein do?
Carries oxygen deficient blood to the heart
What does the “P” represent on an ECG pattern?
The depolarization of the atrial fibers just before they contract
What does the “Q” “R” and “S” represent on a normal ECG pattern?
The depolarization of ventricular fibers just prior to contraction of the ventricular walls
What does the “T” represent on a normal ECG pattern?
The relatively slow depolarization of the ventricular muscle fibers
Where is the heart located?
The mediastinum
What is viscosity?
The ease with which molecules in a fluid slide past one another
What is blood volume?
The amount of blood cells and plasma volume in the cardiovascular system
