What was the Magna Carta?
Written in 1215, the Magna Carta guaranteed specific rights to the English aristocracy which were, inheritance of land (including windows and minors), protection for nobles, and people could not be jailed without a ruling by peers. Most importantly, it put limits on the Monarchy.
What was the Glorious Revolution?
In 1688, the overthrow of James I, which led to further limitations of the monarch by Parliament
What is Patronage?
government positions given to supporters.
Who was Montesquieu?
French political philosopher who developed the idea of the Balance of Power. Mixed government ideas, making it impossible to have a tyranny. (3 branches idea)
Who was John Locke?
English enlightenment writer during the Glorious Revolution. Formed the Two Treaties of Government and stated if the government broke this treaty, then it was a tyranny and the people have the right to overthrow it.
What were Cato’s Letters?
Essays condemning corruption and lack of morality within the British political system and warning against the abuse of power.
Who was King George III?
King of England prior to, during, and after the Revolution. Changed how the colonies were managed, believed the role of the monarch had be downgraded since the Glorious Revolution, and was seen as a great king.
What was the Virginia House of Burgesses?
Elected representatives of the Virginia colony’s government
What was the Fundamental Constitutions of Carolina?
Provided the form of government and society for the Carolina colony from 1669-1698
What was the Charter of Liberties?
Served as the constitution of Pennsylvania from 1701-1776. Would create courts and public schools.
Who was James Otis and the Writs of Assistance?
In 1761, it was a case involving colonists challenging English government acts that they did not like. Otis challenged British rule saying that it was unconstitutional. This idea would later become the foundations for the 4th Amendment. The outcome of this case is not important, but the argument was.
What was the Rights of the British Colonies Asserted and Proved?
In 1764, the British stated that the colonists are not represented in Parliament.
