Wales, Scotland, then Ireland
Why did England want to colonize North America?
The English wanted to eradicate Catholicism and spread Christianity, promote the Monarch, wanted more raw materials for economic benefits, population control, and in search of the “North West Passage.”
What was Jameston and what year was it settled?
Jameston was the first settlement by the British in North American and was settled in 1607.
Why did Jameston almost collapse?
Disease killed about 50% of the population.
What crop was found profitable in Jameston?
Tobacco
When did the Pilgrims come and who were they?
The Pilgrims came in 1620 and were separatists that wanted to break away from the England church. They settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
What was the Mayflower Contract?
A contract the pilgrims created stating that they could govern themselves, not under the rule of James I.
When did the Puritans come and who were they?
The Puritans came in 1630 and wanted to improve the church of England.
What states did the Puritans settle and when?
New York (1664), Carolina/Charleston (1670), Pennsylvania (1681)
Who was William Penn?
Founder of Pennsylvania. He wanted freedom of religion and for settlers and Natives to live in harmony.
