The Breathing system Flashcards
Why is oxygen needed in the bloodstream?
This is to get oxygen to cells for respiration
What are your lungs protected by ?
The ribcage
Where are the Lungs ?
In The Thorax
What is the thorax ?
The top part of your body separated from the lower part of your body (abdomen)
What separates the thorax from lower part of the body?
The Diaphragm
Where does the air you breath in go through ?
The trachea
The Trachea splits into two tubes called?
“bronchi” (Each one is ‘a bronchus’)
What does the bronchi eventually spilt into ?
progressively smaller tubes called “bronchioles”
Where does the bronchioles end at ?
Small bags called “Alveoli” where gas exchange happens.
What does the blood stream help diffuse out of the body ?
Carbon dioxide
What is ventilation ?
The movement of air in and out of the lungs.
What happens in ventilation when breathing in ?
1) The intercostal muscle and diaphragm contracts.
2) The Thorax volume increases
3) The pressure decreases, drawing air in
What happens in ventilation when breathing out?
1) Intercostal muscles and diaphragm relax
2) Thorax volume decreases
3) The pressure increases, so air is forced out
What are artificial ventilators?
Machines that move air (often with more oxygen) into or out of the lungs. Helping people breathe
