Gas and Solute Exchange Flashcards
How do dissolved substances move in and out of cells ?
Diffusion, Osmosis and Active transport
what do life processes need before they can happen?
Gases or dissolved substances
What else needs to move out of cells ?
Waste Substances
The gases and dissolved substances have to move through what to allow necessary substances to pass through
Exchange surface
How are exchange surfaces structured or adapted to maximise effect ?
- They are thin (Short distance to diffuse into)
- Large surface area (Many substances can diffuse at once)
- Lots of blood vessels to get stuff into and out the blood quickly (animals)
- ventialted (animals)
Exchanging substances get more difficult in ?
Bigger and more complex organisms as the place where substances are needed is far from exchange surface
What is the underneath of the leaf ?
The exchange surface
How does the leaf exchange surface area allow carbon dioxide to diffuse in ?
There are small holes in the leaf called stomata
What diffuses out the stomata ?
Oxygen, Water vapour and Carbon dioxide
What increase the surface area of the exchange surface of the leaf
It has a flattened shape
What other exchange surface is there inside the leaf?
The walls of the cell.
How does the air spaces inside the leaf affect gas exchange?
They increase are of exchange surface of the cell walls increasing amount of carbon dioxide.
