5
Q

How does blood enter the heart?

A

The blood enters the heart through the atrium. The atria then contracts forcing blood to the ventricle. The ventricle then forces blood out of the heart to arteries.

6
Q

How is the direction of the blood flow kept in the right direction ?

A

There are heart valves which keep the blood flowing in one direction.

Q

How are arteries specialised?

A

They have thick walls containing muscle and elastic fibres for the high pressure of blood flowing through.

11
Q

How are veins specialised ?

A
  • They have a bigger Lumen and thinner walls to help blood flow, despite low pressure
  • They have valves to keep blood flowing in the right direction.

Q

What is used to deal with coronary heart disease, when fatty tissues build up in the arteries?

A

Stents are used which are tubes that are inserted into arteries keeping them open and squashes fatty acid build up making lumen bigger.

14
Q

How does blood flow inside organs.

A

There are narrow, thin-walled blood vessels (CAPILLARIES) .

15
Q

How does waste substances and substances needed leave body tissues

A

The capillaries flow through the body tissues and because they have thin walls, substances in blood can diffuse into cells and waste substances can be diffused into blood.

16
Q

What is blood

A

This is a tissue and consists of a fluid called plasma

17
Q

What does the plasma contain ?

A

This contains red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

18
Q

What does the blood plasma transport ?

A

This transports carbon dioxide from organs to lungs. Also soluble products of digestion to from small intestine to organs. Urea from liver to kidney.

19
Q

What do red blood cells transport ?

A

They transport Oxygen to organs

20
Q

How are red blood cells specialised ?

A

They are packed with pigments called haemoglobin. They have no nucleus increasing area for haemoglobin.

21
Q

What happens when haemoglobin is combined with oxygen ?

A

It becomes oxyhaemoglobin

22
Q

What happens when oxyhaemoglobin meets organs?

A

The oxyhaemoglobin splits up into oxygen to diffuse into the other organs.

23
Q

Do white blood cells have a nucleus and what do i form?

A

Yes and they form the natural defence system against microbes

24
Q

What are platelets

A

They are small fragments of cells, they have no nucleus.

25
Q

What do platelets ?

A

They clot the site of the wound
