Deforestation Flashcards
What is Deforestation
This is the cutting down of forests for
resources
Why is deforestation a large scale in tropical
This is for timber and to provide land for agriculture.
What are the affects of increased deforestation ?
- This has increased the carbon dioxide levels in atmosphere by combustion and microbes
- reduced the rate at which carbon dioxide is removed from atmosphere and locked up in trees
What has deforestation lead to
A reduction in Biodiversity
Why has deforestation occurred ?
- crops can be grown to be fermented for biofuels (ethanol)
- So there can be a increase of cattle and in rice fields to provide food (More cattle = More Methane from rear end)
What is the negative of more cattle
This means more Methane is released into atmosphere from rear end
What does the destruction of peat bogs lead to ?
This leads to more carbon dioxide being released as plants in bog have carbon dioxide which has not been released
What is a peat bog?
This is a area of land which are acidic and waterlogged.
What happens to plants in peat bog ?
The are partly rotted plants as they have not fully decayed when they die due to lack of oxygen.
What do the partly rotten plants build up to form
They build up to make peat, where all the carbon dioxide is stored. So peat is stored and not released
Why is a peat bog drained
This is drained so land can be used for farmland or it is so it can be cut up and used for fuel. This can also be sold to gardeners
What happens when a peat bog is drained
The peat decomposes, so carbon dioxide is released
Why do people but peat free compost
This is to reduce the demand for peat = reducing carbon dioxide decomposed = released into atmosphere.
