The brain Flashcards
What does the cerebrum consists of?
Two cerebral hemispheres connected by corpus callosum
What is the cerebral cortex?
A thin layer of grey matter near the surface
What does the white matter consist of?
myelinated axon that connects neurons in the nervous system and communicate with other body parts
What does the cerebrum provide?
Higher brain function
What does the cerebral cortex consist of?
Sensory ,association and motor areas
What does one cerebral hemisphere do?
Usually dominant for certain intellectual functions
What are ventricles?
Interconnected cavities within the cerebral hemispheres and brainstem
What fills the ventricles?
Cerebrospinal fluid
What do choroid plexuses in the walls of the ventricles do?
Secrete cerebrospinal fluid
What does the diencephalon contain
Thalamus
What does thalamus do?
Central relay station for incoming sensory impulses and the hypothalamus which maintains homeostasis
What does the limbic system do?
Produces emotions and modifies behaviour
What does the brainstem consist of?
Midbrain, pons and medulla oblongata
What does the midbrain contain?
Reflex centres associated with eye and head movements
What does the pons do?
Relay impulses between the cerebrum and other parts of the nervous system and contains centres that may help regulate breathing
