Neuroglia Flashcards
What is neuroglia?
Collective term for six types of cells
What are the six types of cells?
Glial cells Oligodendrocyte Astrocytes Ependymal cells Schwann cells Satellite cells
what is the function of glial cells?
Protection insulation and general support
Remove bacterial cells and cellar debris
How do glial cells develop ,location and structure
Develop from WBC
Found in CNS
Spider shaped cells
What is an oligodendrocyte and what is its function
An axon of neurons
Produce installation layers of myelin called myelin sheath
Increase speed of conduction in neurons in CNS
What is the structure of astrocytes and what is their function?
Star shaped cells
Prevent capillary leakages
Regulate ions and nutrients in neurons (maintain blood brain barrier)
Where is ependymal located and function?
Lines the cavities in the brain called ventricle and the central canal in spinal cord
Produce CSF that fills the vesicles and centre canal
What do Schwann cells produce?
Myelin sheath
What do satellite cells do?
Protective coat around the cell bodes of peripheral neuron
What cells are found in CNS
microglial cells, oligodendrocyte, astrocytes and ependymal cells
What cells are found in PNS
Schwann cells and satellite cells
