Peripheral nervous system Flashcards
What does the PNS consist of?
Cranial and spinal nerves that branch for the brain and spinal cord to all body parts.
What is the PNS subdivided into?
The somatic and autonomic nervous system
What do the 12 pairs of cranial nerves connect?
The brain to parts in the head, neck and trunk
What are the different types of cranial nerves?
Mixed, sensory or motor
What does the name of cranial nerves indicate?
Their primary functions or general distribution of their fibres
What does the 31 spinal nerves originate from?
Spinal cord
What do all but the first pair are mixed nerves provide?
A two way communication system between the spinal cord and parts of the upper and lower limbs, neck and trunk
How are spinal nerves grouped?
According to the levels from which they arise, and they are numbered in sequence
What does each spinal nerve emerge by?
A dorsal root and a ventral root
What does each spinal nerve divide into?
Several branches just beyond its foramen
What do most spinal nerves combine to form?
Plexuses in which nerve fibres are sorted and recombined so that those fibres associated with a peripheral body part reach it together
