Sulcus
Wrinkles in the brain
Gyrus
Main non-wrinkled mass of the brain. Flat from a front view.
Coronal Cut
Bread Loaf Slices
Axial/ Horizontal/ Transverse Cut
Horizontal cut along the length of the brain. Flat from a dorsal view.
Saggital
Verticle cut splits the brain down the medial. Flat from a lateral view.
Ipsilateral
The same side of the brain
Contralateral
Different sides of the brain
Meninges
Dura, Arachnoid, & Pia
Three membranous layers which provide a protective layer for the brain and spinal cord
Thalamus
Primary relay station between incoming sensory neurons and cortex. Regulates sleep, sensory-motor relay, and alertness.
Hypothalamus
(hypo means under or below): Regulates other hormones. Affects appetite, body temp, sleep.
Limbic system
A collection of parts around the thalamus. Emotion, memory, and reward.
Lobes of the cerebral cortex
Frontal lobe
Parietal lobe
Temporal lobe
Occipital lobe
Broca’s area
Speech production
Frontal lobe
Executive function, planning, motion
Primary Motor Cortex
Lots of motor control
Temporal Lobe
Hearing, memory
Wernicke’s Area
Language processing
Occipital Lobe
Vision
Parietal Lobe
Touch, spatial relations
Insula (sometimes insular lobe)
Gustation, disgust, awareness, empathy, homeostasis, audition, etc.
Cerebellum (the little brain)
Precision motor control and coordination (probably involves some other stuff too
