Soma
Body of Cell
Axon
The long body of a neuron
Plasma Membrane
Separating layer between non-cellular space
Myelin Sheath
Insulating layer over axon which increases action potential firing time
Nucleus and Mitochondria
Center (N) and powerhouse of the cell (M. Inside N)
Dendrites
Receptors
Terminal Buttons
Sends signals to other cells
Ribosomes
Sites within a cell that synthesize new protein molecules
What are the two kinds of neurons?
Sensory & Motor.
Dendritic Spines
Short outgrowths that increase the surface area available for synapses
Nodes of Ranvier
Unmyelinated parts of neurons which allow for the passage of ions in and out of the cell
Multipolar Cells
Motor neuorns are multipolor. They have a single axon and many dendrites.
Pseudounipolar Cells
Sensory neurons are psudounipolar. They have an axon and dendrites branching from the same cell extension. Sensory neurons interpret direct stimuli.
Bipolar Sensory Neuron
Cell with one branch for axon and one for dendrites.
