Emotions Flashcards
The three major theories of emotion
James-Lange Theory
Cannon-Bard Theory
Schater-Singer Two Factor Theory
James-Lange Theory
Physiological arousal drives emotion
Cannon-Bard Theory
Information about a stimulus triggers an emotional response AND bodily reactions
Schater-Singer Two Factor Theory
a person experiences psychological changes, the situation allows them to apply a cognitive label to them
EG. seeing a snake would elicit sympathetic nervous system activation (physiological arousal), and that would be cognitively labeled as fear (cognition) based on context.
Basic Emotions
anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, surprise
The Basic Theory of Emotion
Certain emotions are thought to be innate and universal across cultures, as they are evolutionarily developed. (ontogenetically and phylogenetically )
Limbic System is responsible for
Memory, Emotion, & Stress Response
Major Structures of the Limbic System
Limbic Lobe
Papez Circuit
Insula
Amygdala
Limbic Lobe
Cingulate gyros, medial temporal cortex, hippocampus
Papez Circuit
cingulate cortex —> hippocampus —> hypothalamus —> anterior nuclei of thalamus —> angulate cortex
Amygdala (Emotion)
amygdala: processing of fear and emotional response, emotional memory.
Insula (Emotion)
Involved in disgust, activated by physical, social, and moral disgust.
Pre Frontal Cortex (PFC)(Emotion)
happiness, and emotional regulation
Damage —> alterations in mood
Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC)(Emotion)
Basic Emotion. Sadness.
Hippocampus (Emotion)
Anxiety, Avoidance Behavior, and memory.
