Hormones & Endocrine System Flashcards
Hormones
Chemical messengers that travel through the bloodstream to affect distal (elsewhere) tissue
Where are hormones produced?
Produced by glands, secreted into the blood
Amine Hormones
Amino acids.
Norepinephrine
Peptide Hormones
Any chain of linked amino acids.
Oxytocin
Steroid Hormones
Derived from lipid cholesterol.
Testosterone, Estrogen, Progesterone
Parts of the Endocrine System
Hypothalamus
Pineal gland
Pituitary gland (master gland)
Thyroid gland (stimulated by anterior pituitary)
Adrenal glands
Pancreas
Sexual Organs
Placenta
Hypothalamus
Helps control hormone secretions
Pineal Gland
Primarily makes melatonin. Sleep and body rhythms. Also helps with materation.
Pituitary Gland (master gland)
Growth
Anterior Pituitary
Regulates the production and release of other hormones
Posterior pituitary
Oxytocin and vasopressin
Thyroid gland (stimulated by anterior pituitary)
Growth and metabolism hormones
Adrenal Glands
Emotional arousal and stress
Cortisol
Pancreas
Insulin regulation
Sexual organs (testicles and ovaries)
Sexual maturation and behavior
