what does the Benedict’s test test for?
A
reducing and non reducing sugars

what if the results negative of the first Benedict’s test?
A
there may be a non reducing sugar present so the test needs to be repeated

How do you test for a non reducing sugar?
A
- get a new sample of the thing your testing
- add hydrochloric acid to break the bonds
- place in water bath for 5 mins
- slowly add sodium hydrocarbonate solution to neutralise
- Retest using BS and if there’s a colour change, NRS is present
- If there isn’t, there’s no reducing or non reducing sugar present

How do you test for a reducing sugar?
A
1.add benedicts reagent
2. heat in a water bath
3. if a brick red precipitate forms, a reducing sugar is present
