proteins Flashcards
what are the monomers of proteins?
amino acids
what is formed when 2 amino acids join?
a dipeptide
what is formed when more than 2 amino acids join?
polypeptide
what are 2 types of proteins?
fibrous, vital for structure
globular, metabolic functions
what are proteins made up of?
one or more polypeptide
what is the general structure of an amino acid?
an amine group, an r group, hydrogen atom and carboxylic acid
H R O
N-C-C
H H OH
how do 2 amino acids join together?
a condensation reaction, the OH from one carboxylic acid and a H from the amine group are removed to produce a water molecule and a peptide bond is formed to bond the two amino acids
what is the bond formed between 2 amino acids
peptide
what is an amino acid made up of?
Made up of a central carbon atom bonded to a hydrogen atom, a R group, a carboxyl group and an amine group.
what is a dipeptide?
A molecule formed by the condensation of two proteins.
what is a polypeptide?
a polymer formed by the condensation of many amino acids.
describe the test for proteins
add sodium hydroxide solution to ensure the test solution is alkaline
add biuret or copper sulphate solution
if protein is present, solution will turn purple/lilac, if not, solution will remain blue
