hydrolysis reactions Flashcards
why is hydrolysis important?
When an organism digests biological molecules like carbs, they are vital for survival. However, they are too large to be transported/diffused into the cells or protein channels and be used in reactions. Therefore, hydrolysis breaks them down so they can be used.
Does hydrolysis release or use water?
use
what does the hydrolysis of protein produce?
amino acids
what does the hydrolysis of carbohydrate produce?
disaccharides, monosaccharides and
glucose
what does the hydrolysis of lipids produce?
fatty acids and monoglycerides
Define hydrolysis
A hydrolysis reaction breaks a chemical bond between two molecules and involves the use of a water molecule
give 2 ways in which the hydrolysis of ATP is used in cells?
- phosphorylation- makes compound more reactive
- to provide energy for other reactions
name the 2 products of ATP hydrolysis
adenosine di phosphate and phosphate group
