first public health act
1848
This caused the setting up of a Board of Health, and gave towns the right to appoint a Medical Officer of Health. These Boards of Health were to oversee standards of health, hygiene and public health. But improvements varied and were not compulsory. Standards of public health were still often very poor. They were disbanded in 1858
second public health act
compulsory version of the first act
This enforced laws about slum clearance, provision of sewers and clean water, and the removal of nuisances. It made improvements compulsory for local council authorities.

Liberal mayor of Birmingham in the 1870s he led slum clearances, improvements to the water supply, new town planning and the building of suburbs, libraries, swimming pools, schools and parks in the slum area replaced by the Corporation Street he massively cut the death rate.

Port sunlight: built for workers at levers soap factory
on the wirral near liverpool. Between 1888 and 1914 it was built and used by workers. Lever saw it as his Christian duty to help the lives of his workers by building good houses, a theatre.
