They passed through Nottingham and realised how strong Lancastrian resistance was going to be
Scouts were sent ahead but were killed by Somerset’s men
They arrived at Yorks Castle at Sandel and found the Queen’s forces were surprisingly large

Lancastrian victory
30th December 1460, the Yorkists were defeated at Wakefield
York died in battle and Salisbury was beheaded by his captors
York’s son Edmund and Salisbury’s son Thomas were also killed
Somerset and Northumberland had finally avenged the deaths of their fathers at the first Battle of st. Albans
York and Salisbury’s heads were displayed at the gates of the city of York
