How did the French influence the English crown?
- Louis managed to persuade Warwick, Clarence and Margaret of Anjou, to set aside their differences and join forced
- French king hoped to arrange a Neville-Lancastrian alliance in order to restore Henry VI to the throne. In return Louis expected the English to break their treaty with Burgundy

If Henry VI was king once again, Clarence would no longer be the heir presumptive. Clarence realised that all of his former Lancastrian lands would have to be returned if Henry was successfully restored

What happened in December 1470?
France declared war of Burgundy with Warwick’s Lancastrian alliance forcing England to follow suit
This made Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, give Edward IV 50,000 crowns to help him regain his throne and stop England attacking Burgundy
Who did Edward make peace with?
The Hanseatic league who gave him 14 ships to sail back to England
He won the support of the Duke of Clarence and the Earl of Northumberland, both of whom risked loosing land if the Lancastrian remained in power
What happened on February 19th 1471?
Edward set sail for England with 26 ships and 1200 men
What was the struggle in England?
The Lancastrian regime struggled to affirm its position under a weakened Henry VI, Warwick was in control of the government
Loyal Yorkists remained in England including Queen Elizabeth and her brother Sir Richard Woodville, Clarence was appointed Lieutenant of France to keep him out of the way
What happened when Edward landed in Ravenspur?
He found it difficult to raise more forces
However as he moves south more men joined thanks to a call to arms by Lord Hastings.
Edward marched to London to gain a strategic position and was joined by Clarence causing Warwick to lose his key ally

The city of London opened its gates to Edward IV where he was reunited wit his wife and newborn
What happened to Margaret of Anjou?
- Turned to the Duke of Burgundy in 1473 and despite hosting her, he couldn’t give her support
- She lived in the Duchy whilst receiving a pension of 6000 crowns
- She continued her diplomatic efforts with foreign Lancastrian supporters including Louis XI
What happened to Edward, Prince of Wales?
- Became involved in diplomatic maters and signed letters of appeal for help to the king of Portugal
- Married Anne Neville
- Hadn’t inherited his father’s health issues and was keen to take an active role in battle
