French and Indian War - 1763
British vs French for control of North America. By 1763, the British defeat the French. French win.
Stamp Act - 1765
The first tax on the colonist. Caused an uproar in the colonies, created beginnings of a resistance movement. Sons of Liberty and Stamp Act repealed by Parliament.
Boston Massacre - March 5, 1770
Five Colonist were killed by British soldiers. Paul Revere and Sam Adams used propaganda to inflame the colonists.
First Shot of the Revolution - April 19, 1775
The British began to march towards Lexington and Concord. April 19, 1775, shots were fired at Lexington. This became known as the “Shot Heard Round The World”
Second Continental Congress - May, 1775
May, 1775, Congress met in Philadelphia, They selected a commander of the army, managed the war effort, and acted as the Government.
Common sense - January, 1775
Written by Thomas Paine, January, 1775. Favored separation from Britain. Wanted to create a egalitarian society. Sold 500,000 copies in less than a year. Used simple language and emotionally powerful,
Declaration of independence - July, 1776
Written by Thomas Jefferson. People have the right to abolish their government. The ideas expressed in the Declaration, and the results of the Revolution, will forever change the world.
Bunker Hill - June, 1775
First major battle of the war. Under General William Howe the British eventually took the hill, but suffered 1,050 casualties. Colonial Casualty total was 450.
Battle of Saratoga - Sept 19 and Oct 7, 1777
Considered a turning point in the war. British led by John Burgoyne, are surrounded and forced to surrender on Oct 17, 1777.
Battle of Yorktown - 1781
Washington began a siege of Yorktown, and soon attack. Oct 19, 1781, General Cornwallis surrendered ending the war.
Treaty of Paris - 1783
Great Britain officially recognized American independence; war officially ended. U.S. boundary extended north to Canada, South to Florida, and West to the Mississippi River.
