Fugitive Slave Act
Fugitives not entitled to trial by jury, if caught helping a slave could be fined or imprisoned.
Personal Liberty Laws
Slaves new guaranteed trial by jury, not allowed to imprison runaways.
Underground Railroad
Network or system to aid escaping slaves. Harriet Tubman helped.
Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852)
Written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. A novel about the evils of slavery.
Popular Sovereignty
Right or residence of a territory to vote for or against slavery.
Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854)
Gave popular sovereignty to residents of Kansas and Nebraska.
Border Ruffians
Residents of Missouri. Pro slavery people from Missouri coming in to Kansas to vote.
“Bleeding Kansas” (1856)
Violence in Kansas. 200 people were killed over slavery.
Nativism
Favoring Native born Americans over immigrants.
The American Party (Formed in 1854)
Also known as the Know-Nothings. Against immigrants and Catholics.
Free Soil Party (1848)
Against expansion of slavery, wanted land for free white working men because worked the land there would be no jobs for hire.
Republican Party (formed in 1854)
Stop the spread of slavery. Elected John Fremont.
Scott V Sandford (1857)
1857 supreme court case. Court ruled Dredd Scott had no right to sue because he was not a citizen and also said they could take property whenever they want.
Lecompton Constitution (1857)
Pro slavery people in Kansas writing constitution legalizing slavery, but got rejected.
