How did Sam Houston feel about joining the United States?
At first he was hesitant to join the United States, but after a few years of Texas being a country he quickly realized that they could not survive on their own.

The belief that the United States should expand its boundaries to the Pacific Ocean.

Texas had many problems with their neighbor to the South, Mexico, and the United States did not want to get involved.

Abraham Lincoln was elected president and this caused the first of the Southern states to secede from the union.
What did Sam Houston think about the idea of seceding?
He was strongly opposed to the idea of succession and stopped Texas from doing so as long as he could.

What was the purpose of the Union blockade?
To not allow Texas ships with much needed supplies to get to the Southern troops stationed along the East coast.
What was the most important thing Texas did to help the South during the Civil War?
Provided much needed supplies and men to the war effort.
What were the effects of the Union blockade on the Texas home front?
The blockade created many shortages of goods on the home front, which made it quite difficult for the people back home.

To bring the Southern states back into the Union. To make the United States whole again.

Andrew Johnson became the president and took over.

Congressional reconstruction was more tough.
What was the Emancipation Proclamation?
Document stating that all slaves are now free.

Laws limiting the rights of African Americans passed by Southern governments after the Civil War.
Who was in charge of Congressional Reconstruction?
The Radical Republicans were in charge after becoming the majority party in Congress.
