Science Flashcards
Biotic
A living thing that affects the ecosystem.
Abiotic
A nonliving thing that affects the
ecosystem
Organisms
: An individual living thing
Population
a group of organisms of
one type that live in the same area
Community
populations that live
together in a defined area
Ecosystem
a system comprising all
the biotic and abiotic factors in an area
and all the interactions among them
Competition
When more than one individual or population in an ecosystem relies
on the same limited resources
Niche
A position or role taken by a kind of organism within its community
Adaptation
A process by which a population becomes
better suited to its environment by
increasing the frequencies of alleles that
provide benefits to survival and
reproduction
Climate
Average weather patterns for a
particular region
Extinction
The permanent disappearance of a
species from Earth
Pollution
The presence of harmful or unwanted
levels of material in an environment
Short-Term Environmental Change
Environmental change that occurs quickly.
Organisms have to migrate or they risk
death
Long-Term Environmental Change
Environmental change that occurs slowly
over time and affects organisms and
their subsequent populations
Invasive Species
A species that enters an area from
somewhere else and disrupts the
native ecosystem
