Chemistry 6th grade Flashcards
What does the word matter mean in science ?
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Everything has matter in it.
What is an element
A pure substance made up of subatomic particles. There are 118 elements in the periodic table.
How are elements represented on periodic table?
Elements are represented using a element symbol/chemical symbol. CAPITAL LETTERS
C- carbon
How are elements arranged on periodic table ?
groups and periods. Groups show valence electrons thy go ⬇️. Periods show #of electron shells and go ➡️. Increase by atomic #
Where are metals on periodic table ?
Left of zigzag line
Where is nonmetals on periodic table ?
Right of zigzag line, all noble gases
Where are metalloids located on the periodic table?
Found on zigzag line.
Properties of metals ?
Malleable, Ductile and Good Conductors of Heat and Electricity. Shiny Luster, Solid,High Melting Point.
properties of nonmetals?
dull, brittle, poor conductors of electricity and heat. Solid, liquid and gas.
Electrons …..
Located in the electron cloud, negative charge.
properties of metalloids?
have properties of both metals and nonmetals
3 parts of atom are ….
- proton
- Neutron
- Electron
Neutrons …..
Found in nucleus, neutral charge.
Protons…..
Found in nucleus, positive charge
H2O has?
2 helium elements
one oxygen element
groups tell you
number of valence electrons
periods tell you
How many electron shells there are, 7 periods
Density formula
Density = mass/volume
physical property of matter
can include a substance’s color, hardness, density, mass, or volume, taste, mealting
*can be observed without changing the substance’s identity
Chemical Properties of Matter
the ability of a substance to combine with or change into one or more substances; the inability of a substance to change into another substance. Rusting, toxicity etc
physical change examples
cutting string, crumpling paper, melting ice, evaporating water
chemical change examples
rusting, burning something, spoiled food or baking/cooking
Chemical changes signs
- Light given off
- Temperature change
- Color change
- Gas released/bubbles
- Percipetant
What is an element?
a Substance that contains only ONE type of atom.
What is a compound?
2 or more elements chemically combined
What is a mixture?
A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined
3 main states of matter
solid, liquid, gas
cross-contamination
the spreading of bacteria or other pathogens from one food to another. Think chemicals in lab.
Physical lab…
Sorting cereal melting ice shaping play dough cutting paper smoothing rocks mixing koolaid
Chemical lab…
Cooking pancakes rusting nail rotting apple milk + vinger Baking soda + vinger activaitng glowstick' hand warmers
