tewksbury Flashcards
how does impermeable rock factor into the risk of flooding
Some rock is impermeable and so the rain can’t soak into it. Instead it runs straight into the river.
how do tributaries effect the risk of flooding
Where rivers join there is a greater chance of flooding because of all of the extra water.
how does a loss of trees effect flooding
Trees soak up water and catch water in their leaves (interception). If we cut them down there is more chance of flooding.
how does a flat floodplain effect flooding
The floodplain is flat land around the river that floods when the river gets too full – Don’t live on a floodplain!
how does heavy rainfall effect flooding
Heavy rain is the main cause of flooding
how does soggy soil effect flooding
If there has been a lot of rain lately, the soil will be soggy already. When more rain arrives it won’t be able to soak into the soil.
how does built up areas effect flooding
Rain can’t soak through concrete, therefore the water will run off straight into the river.
