Tests for Gases and water (pg 53) Flashcards
1
Q
What is the test for chlorine?
A
- Chlorine bleaches damp red litmus paper, turning it white
-may turn red for a moment (solution of chlorine is acidic)
2
Q
What is the test for Oxygen?
A
-oxygen relights a glowing splint
3
Q
What is the test for Carbon Dioxide?
A
- turns limewater cloudy
- bubble the gas through a test tube of limewater and watch what happens
4
Q
What is the test for Hydrogen?
A
- Hydrogen makes a “squeaky pop” with a lighted splint.
- (The noise comes from the hydrogen burning with the oxygen in the air to form water)
5
Q
What is test for Ammonia?
A
- Ammonia turns damp red litmus paper blue
- (it has a very strong smell)
6
Q
What can be used as a test for water?
A
Copper (II) sulfate
7
Q
How do you form blue crystals?
A
- when copper sulfate is bound to water (water of crystallisation)
8
Q
How can you get rid of the water when making crystals?
A
- heat the blue hydrated copper (II) sulfate crystals
9
Q
What do the blue hydrated copper (II) sulfate crystals leave?
A
- leaves a white anhydrous copper (II) sulfate powder, which doesnt have any water bound to it
10
Q
What do you then add to the white powder?
A
- water to get the blue crystals back again
11
Q
How do you test for water?
A
- add anhydrous copper (II) sulfate and see if the white powder turns blue
12
Q
What does it mean if a sample is pure?
A
- its only made up of one substance
13
Q
What will pure water boil and freeze at?
A
boil- 100 degrees
freeze- 0 degrees
