testing for alkenes Flashcards
1
Q
what do alkenes do to bromine water
A
orange to colourless
2
Q
why does alkenes turn bromine water colourless
A
This is due to the bromine atoms bonding to the alkene by breaking the double bond. The molecule has been SATURATED. CHLORINE and IODINE react in a similar way, while WATER can react with an alkene to make an ALCOHOL.
3
Q
what does cracking do
A
We use CRACKING to break longer alkanes into a shorter ALKANE and an ALKENE to meet these demands.
4
Q
what at the 2 types of cracking
A
CATALYTIC CRACKING uses a ZEOLITE CATALYST 5500C.
STEAM CRACKING uses no catalyse and a higher temperature ae >8000C.
