Analyzing and purifying water samples (Required Practical) Flashcards
1
Q
what are the steps to figure out id water is pure
A
- check the ph of the water (pure water has ph7) (Do this by putting water on universal indicator paper which should make it turn green) and move on to the next test
- use a balance to weigh an empty evaporating basin and record the mass
- fill the basin with the water sample and place this on a tripod and gauze
- use a Bunsen burner to gently heat the water until all is evaporated
- allow the basin to cool and weigh it again
- if the mass of the empty basin as increased then there was dissolved salts in it (if the mass stayed the same then the water could be pure)
2
Q
what doesn’t non pure water have in it
A
dissolved acid or alkali
3
Q
how can you purify water using distillation (first talk about the setup then the method)
A
- you use a conical flask containing the water sample with it being on a tripod and gauze
- The top of the flask has a delivery tube which is pointed into a test tube
- the test tube is in a beaker with ice and water
(The method)
4. gently heat the water using the Bunsen burner to make it boil gently
- water should have evaporated and formed water vapor (steam) and travels along the collecting tube
- water vapor enters the cold test tube it condenses back into liquid water
- this is now distilled water
4
Q
what does distilled water NOT contain and what ph is it
A
no dissolves solid
ph7
