fractional distilation Flashcards
1
Q
what do hydrocrabons have to be done to them before they can be used
A
they have to be separated by fractions before used
2
Q
what is the process of factional distillation
A
They’re evaporated and they rise up the fractionating column where they re condense at different
heights: higher = colder.
Longer alkanes have higher boiling points due to more energy needed to overcome the stronger inter molecular forces, so they re condense lower down the column.
3
Q
name the columns from top to bottom
A
LPG
petrol
kerosene
diesel oil
heavy fuel oil
bitumen
