Test questions/answers for Monday Flashcards
What is the difference between primary and secondary data?
Primary Data= Information directly from the source which is specific to the aim of the study
Secondary Data= Collected by a third party which is not specific for the aim of the study
How could a psychologist continue her investigation by carrying out thematic analysis of the interview recordings ?
Use the recordings to make a transcript of the interview
Analyse the transcript
Review the transcript looking for emergent themes that could be linked to later aggression behaviour
How could a researcher use content analysis to analyse what the mothers had written in their diaries?
Content Analysis= analysing data such as texts using coding units such as themes
The researcher may suggest checklists, relevant examples, counting or tallying behaviours
What is Content Analysis?
A technique for analysing data such as texts according to themes or categories.
It is a way of analysing qualitative data
Explain how the psychologists might have carried out content analysis to analyse drawings
Make categories for the drawings
Count examples for each category to provide quantitative data
Compare drawings over the 4 week period to see if there is a change.
What are characteristics of Case Studies?
- Carried out in the real world
- Idiographic
- Individualistic
What is a weakness of Case Studies?
Not easily generalisable and difficult to replicate
How could a psychologist maintain confidentiality when reporting a case study?
Making sure the individual is not easily identifiable. For example, making a fake name, avoiding school name and address.
Explain one reason why it is important for research to be replicated.
It increases external validity as findings from a study are more reliable if they occur more than once
How could observational research be improved by conducting observations in a controlled environment?
It means extraneous variables can be controlled. For example age, gender or features of the environment like sound and lighting. This control of extraneous variables means the study can be replicated.
What is one ethical implication of research in psychology.
Effects of research on participants. For example, Milgram’s obedience research and his attitudes to people of different nationalities
What is Self Report?
When the participant gives information to the researcher of their own feelings involving responding to questionaries’.
What is one limitation of self report ?
Lacks objectivity and validity
