Test one intro to parasitology Flashcards
What are the three types of parasites?
Helminths: Worm like parasites
Arthropods: ticks and insects
Protozoan: single celled parasites
Define symbiosis
An association of organisms that cannot exist independently.
Define mutualism
a relationship where both organisms are benefited
Define commensulism
An association where one organism is benefited and the other is unaffected
Define disease
An association where one organism is benefited and the other is harmed
What is the difference between an ectoparasite and endoparasite?
Ectoparasite lives outside the body, endoparasite lives inside the body. Ecto- causes infestation while endo- causes infection
Define definitive host
host which harbors the sexually mature version of the parasite
Define intermediate host
Organism in which the larval or asexual form of the parasite undergoes development
Define incedental host
An unusual definitive host. One that isnt required for the parasites survival.
Define carrier host
Carries the larval stage of the parasite without development
Define reservoir host
Hosts that harbor the same parasite species as man.
Define vector
Object or organism responsible for transmitting the parasite from one to another.
What are the two types of vectors? Differentiate between the two.
Biological and Mechanical.
Biological is where the parasite undergoes development before being transmitted while the mechanical is where the parasite is transmitted unchanged.
How do parasites avoid the immune system?
Antigenic variation Immune supression. Molecular mimicry Concealment of antigens Intracellular location
what are the toxic parasite products?
Destructive enzymes
amoebic pore
endotoxins
catabolites
