What were the four Chinese Dynasties?
Shang, Zhou, Qin, Han
Huanghe River-
AKA yellow river, where the first civilization of China develops
Shang Dynasty
They were the first to build cities along the yellow river (1700 BC)
Zhou Dynasty-
Overthrow the Shang, extend the territory further south while encouraging Mandarin Chinese and encourage feudalism, which leads to their downfall as more individual states become powerful and challenge the emperor himself.
Han Dynasty-
Use Confucianism as their main philosophy, have a civil service exam to ensure that political leaders are fit for their positions, and they have a peaceful golden age that leads to many accomplishments after a peasant (Liu Bang) overthrows the Qin Dynasty after Shi Huangdi dies.
Silk Road-
Trade routes from china to Eastern Europe that the Han Dynasty benefits from, this encourages cultural diffusion as China’s culture comes in contact with the outside world
Shi Huangdi-
Brutal ruler of the Qin Dynasty that forces laborers to build a Great Wall, uses idea of legalism and is very afraid of his own mortality
Confucianism-
Philosophy developed by Confucius during the warring states period; stresses filial piety and the importance of respect towards a just ruler.
Filial Piety-
Respect for those above you, determined by five relationships (ruler at the top and elders at the next level).
Daoism-
Philosophy that everything in nature has a spirit
Mandate of Heaven-
Belief that the gods put you on the throne to rule, and if you become a bad ruler, the gods send natural disasters as warnings which cause you to lose your mandate and you are overthrown (idea created by the Zhou dynasty).
Dynastic Cycle-
The pattern of rising and falling of Chinese dynasties that happens all throughout Chinese history up until 1911.
Feudalism-
When lords have land and the peasants living on it work and fight to gain more land
The Han are best known for creating what kind of governmental system?
A tightly-knit bureaucracy with multiple levels that allowed the government to reach its citizens unlike any other ancient civilization.
