Test 4 Flashcards
Abiotic factors
Not alive. Sun, water, soil
Ecology
Study of how living things interact with the environment.
Biotic factors
Living things. Plants and animals
Ecosystem.
Unit of nature that provides what is needed to survive.
Niche
The role of a species in an ecosystem.
Competitive exclusion principle.
That two species cannot occupy the same niche for long.
Two types of producers.
Photo autotrophs. Sun.
Chemoautotrophs. Chemicals.
Six types if consumers.
Herbivores, carnivores, Omnivores, decomposers, scavengers, detritivores, seprotrophs.
Food chain
Diagram that shows what eats what.
Food web.
Shows multiple pathways of energy flow.
Trophic levels.
The feeding positions of a food chain or web.
Biochemical cycles.
Elements in an ecosystem that pass through biotic and abiotic elements.
Exchange pool.
Rain to tree to evaporation to atmosphere to rain
Reservoir.
Holds something for a very long time. Ocean.
Water cycle.
Water evaporates and transpirates then condenses in the clouds and precipitates.
Carbon cycle.
Carbon moves from one reservoir to another.
Community.
All biotic parts of an ecosystem their populations and interactions.
Predation.
Consumes prey. Prey adopt camouflage.
Keystone species.
Very important species.
Competition
Relation between species competing for the same resources.
Interspecific.
Different species.
Intraspecific.
Same species.
3 types of symbiotic relationships.
Mutualism. Both benefit.
Commensalism. One benefits one is not changed.
Parasitism. One benefits one is harmed.
Ecological succession.
How populations change through time. Primary succession. Never been colonized, bare rock.
Secondary succession. An area that has been inhabited but destroyed.
